Cultivating Principled Professionals: UCJPIA Holds ESG Seminar on Ethics and Sustainability

The University of the Cordilleras Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (UCJPIA), in partnership with P&A Grant Thornton, conducted a half-day seminar titled “The ESG Awakening: Elevating Ethics in Professional Practice” on March 6, 2026, at the UC Theater, with approximately 230 accounting students in attendance.

The seminar aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, sustainability, and ethical responsibility within professional practice. It also provided insights into how these frameworks are applied in real-world business and advisory settings.

UCJPIA Adviser Ms. Franchelle P. Wallis opened the event by emphasizing the growing relevance of sustainability beyond compliance, highlighting its role in shaping long-term organizational value and responsible decision-making.

The keynote address was delivered by Lucky L. Cimatu, Senior Managing Consultant at P&A Grant Thornton and Lead Sustainability Reporting Officer. He discussed the integration of ESG principles into business strategy and underscored that ethical and sustainable practices contribute to organizational resilience and long-term success. The session also included professional insights on navigating careers in sustainability and advisory services.

The seminar served as a platform for bridging academic knowledge with industry practice, enabling students to contextualize theoretical concepts within current professional standards. It highlighted the increasing demand for accountants and business professionals to incorporate sustainability and ethical considerations into decision-making processes.

The program concluded with closing remarks from UCJPIA President Leziel G. Bacani, followed by the presentation of a Certificate of Recognition to the keynote speaker. The recognition was awarded by College of Accountancy Dean Jasmin May P. Baniaga and Ms. Wallis, along with UCJPIA officers.

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by academic and professional institutions to prepare future accountants for evolving industry expectations, particularly in areas related to sustainability reporting, corporate governance, and ethical accountability.
