Students from BSMA 3G of the University of the Cordilleras conducted a community outreach program in Barangay Bekkel, La Trinidad, Benguet, integrating education, environmental action, and community service to address local needs.
The initiative, led by Project Head Fraulein Maidap under the guidance of Adviser Mr. Carlos Vicuña, was implemented through two components: Project KinderCare and Project Bayanihan. Project KinderCare focused on early childhood education and health, while Project Bayanihan addressed environmental and communal concerns.
At Bekkel Elementary School, students facilitated guided reading sessions for kindergarten learners and conducted basic hygiene education. Hygiene kits and reading materials were distributed, followed by a feeding program aimed at supporting children’s well-being. These activities were designed to reinforce both literacy and health practices among young learners.
Project Bayanihan involved environmental and infrastructure-related efforts. Students conducted clean-up drives, planted trees, and repainted school facilities, including sheds. Informational signages promoting environmental awareness were installed, while bulletin boards on animal welfare were created. The group also introduced improvised trash bins made from recycled plastic bottles to encourage proper waste management.
Barangay Bekkel was selected based on identified community needs, with coordination from local officials to ensure that activities aligned with community priorities. The class was organized into ten groups, each assigned specific responsibilities, while overall project management and communication were centrally supervised.
Resource mobilization formed part of the initiative, with student groups securing sponsorships from health advocates and local businesses to support materials and program implementation. The outreach also demonstrated the application of academic concepts in management accounting and project management, particularly in budgeting and resource allocation.
The program highlighted the role of student-led initiatives in community engagement and social responsibility, with participation from local residents and beneficiaries, especially young learners.
