Empowering the Next Generation: BSMA Block D Leads Literacy and Financial Awareness Initiatives

Students from BSMA Block D of the University of the Cordilleras implemented two education-focused outreach programs—Project LEARN and Project SMART—at Mabini Elementary School, targeting literacy development and financial awareness among primary and intermediate learners.

Project LEARN (Literacy Engagement and Academic Readiness for the New Generation), led by Wynston Kelly B. Gumabay, focused on assessing and supporting the literacy skills of Grade 2 students. The initiative addressed foundational competencies such as reading, writing, and basic numeracy, which are essential for academic readiness. Through guided activities and assessments, the program provided both learners and teachers with clearer insights into students’ current skill levels, helping identify areas for improvement.

The project emphasized direct engagement with young learners, enabling students to practice literacy skills in a structured yet supportive environment. It also contributed to strengthening early education by reinforcing classroom instruction with additional learning support.

Complementing this effort, Project SMART (Strengthening Money Awareness and Responsible Thinking), led by Jeric G. Gonzales, introduced financial literacy concepts to students in Grades 3 to 6. The program featured a four-hour session combining lectures and interactive activities designed to teach budgeting, saving, and responsible spending.

Participants were guided in distinguishing between needs and wants and were introduced to basic financial decision-making principles. The initiative aimed to instill responsible financial habits at an early age, equipping students with practical knowledge applicable to everyday life.

Both projects were conducted through structured learning sessions that combined instruction with participatory activities, ensuring that concepts were both understood and applied. The initiatives received active participation from students and support from the school, reflecting strong engagement with both literacy and financial education topics.

Through Project LEARN and Project SMART, BSMA Block D demonstrated the role of student-led initiatives in addressing educational gaps and promoting life skills among young learners. The programs highlighted the importance of early intervention in both academic development and financial literacy as foundations for long-term growth.
